But what is The Internet? Baran worked on the first packet switched digital communications, but if Vint Cerf invented the internet (TCP/IP), then early PSNs were not it. if Tim B Lee invented the internet (WWW), then TCP/IP networks were not it.

If ARPANet was not the Internet, and NSFNet was not The Internet, but became the Internet when Al Gore drafted legilslation to allow non-NSF members to connect to to the NSFNet for commecial and personal purposes, as is commonly accepted, then you can say that Al Gore did create the Internet, in a true and meaningful way (I hesitate to say Invent as he's not an engineer).

Of course many, many people worked on it. Paul Baran pretty much invented the whole darned thing. They predicted very accurately in the mid 1960's how it would be commercialized. He elaborated on TCP/IP in the very early 1960's and specified the basic math of it. Go read the Memorandum, they are pre word processor and succint. Internet is 'arpanet' commercialized.

The only thing that prevented the 1966 arpanet from being internet was "Ma Bell". Once she was finished of in the mid '80's with the MCI lawsuit...within a few years companies like AOL reached into the RAND filing cabinets (same place the PATRIOT Act came from...they have big filing cabinets but that's another story) and implemented dial up. ..

No one created the internet. It was originally a green screen mainframe way of getting research info and files from different universities and sources without having to go to the old card catalog and library. Then someone figured out you can communicate on it too and then it got perverted to what you see it today.

The World Wide Web creation, the HTTP integration, The first ever Web Browser, The First ever Website, The first use of Hyperlinks use was all build together and integrated together at the CERN laboratory (the European Organization for Nuclear Research).

The goal was to allow for much easier and much quicker data sharing and development of new projects between scientists.

The first ever website is still online to this day!

The Internet was almost completely unheard of before the WWW and the first Webbrowser and first Website. That is exactly what made it all practical and started the immense explosion of the Internet/Web use to what it is today.

Sure we can say that the development of engines were a great breakthrough. But it was Carl Benz that was the first to put it all together in the world first ever Car. It was the Wright Brothers that put everything together to make the first ever plane. It is the Car and the Plane that transformed everything. While the combustion engine is one of the central components the engine itself did not cause those transformations. It is not what made it useful for the masses.

That was the Car. That was the Plane. That was the World Wide Web, the first Webbrowser and first Website system, HTTP and the Hyperlink combination. That is the whole package. That is why we are typing here today. Because of the World Wide Web. ..
