ubuntu login screen not showing

This early morning, while working, the updates Ubuntu 14.04 "button" highlighted. Installed the updates (60 Mb), inserted the required password and, as requested, rebooted the system. But now I'm not able to use the PC as before anymore; the screen cards'fans do not work anymore (it's awfully silent here...) and, as you can see, the login password box disappered. But even worse...I left the pc unattended for 10 minutes and got "freezed" (winter is approaching....)))...the only possibility left was to switch it off, wait few seconds and turn it on again...Follows the picture....How to unroll the latest troublesome ubuntu 14.04 update?

As far as i know unity of your system is crashed ,switch to console by hitting ctrl+alt+f2 then start lightdm service, it is maybe stopped the command is sudo service lightdm start. . reconfigure, In case the first option doesn't work by typing sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm still not working ... then reset unity by using command unity --reset then press ctrl+alt+f8/f9

It can be solved by entering into the system remotely and re-installing these packages: xdm, lightdm, ubuntu-desktop and nvidia-current. But the you have to install again cuda and other dependencies, which will be wiped out by this absurd update.
